the Phillies Back home after an embarrassing series in Atlanta. The Braves stunned the Phillies, and the club skipped four straight games. The Phillies are still in the driver’s seat regarding the playoffs, but they can’t afford to lose a 5th straight game in September. Welcoming a hot Toronto Blue Jays team to South Philly is not what the Phillies want to see.
If ever there was a time to avenge the 1993 World Series, now is the time.
taking care of business
The Phillies are in control of their fate as they pull down the stretch. Club sits 2.5 games ahead of Milwaukee Brewers For the final wild card spot in the National League. Thanks to the New York Mets, the Brewers lost on Monday night to give the Phillies an extra half-game lead.
Thanks to Destiny Lugardo Phillies Nation, The chart above shows what the Phillies need to do to keep themselves in the playoffs. The club has given itself an advantage by taking the season series against Milwaukee. TeaThe Brewers have to win 3 more games than the Phillies To leapfrog him into a wild card between today and the end of the season. The San Diego Padres throw a small wrinkle in these plans, but if the Phillies win some upcoming series, it won’t matter.
play for october
The Phillies are not the only team in this series to play for the playoffs. The Toronto Blue Jays are in the midst of another playoff quest. Toronto loaded this past off-season and were considered the favorite by many to win the World Series before the season began. After a hot start by the Yankees, the Blue Jays’ promotion fell through, but the club remains very competitive.
The Blue Jays have sealed the top wild card spot in the American League. they are sitting 5.5 games behind New York Yankees for first place in AL East, So there is reason to play for the rest of the season.
Toronto’s mighty offense featuring Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, Bo Bichette and many others has a lineup that can rival any other in the league. The Phillies’ pitching staff will have to carefully locate their pitches over the next two games. If they fail to do so, the Blue Jays will pay them.
Game 1: Kyle Gibson (10-6, 4.45 ERA) vs. Ross Stripling (8-4, 2.94 ERA)
This is the game the Phillies have to win. While Ross Stripling is a great pitcher in his own right, he is not as impressive as the guy who will pitch game two of the series for Toronto. Stripling has been really solid for the Blue Jays this season and will definitely be huge for them in the playoffs. Toronto starter doesn’t allow multiple home runs, on season just 11 left. Waiting for a swing to change the game is not the way the Phillies should be approaching this game.
Kyle Gibson looked great against the Miami Marlins In this last beginning. The difficulty of Marlins lineup vs Toronto lineup is no less than a challenge. Gibson will need to be even better than Wednesday if he is going to lead the Phillies to victory. Kyle has shown he has what he has this season and has stepped in big moments for the team. He has also shown why he is the 4th/5th starter and has let the team down in some big games. The Phillies need the best from Gibson if they want to beat the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Game 2: Jack Wheeler (11-7, 3.07 ERA) vs. Kevin Gossman (12-10, 3.45 ERA)
Phillies ace will return to the mound on Wednesday The night of Jack Wheeler’s return from injury. Wheeler has missed three weeks due to pain in his right forearm, and the Phillies wanted to keep Jack’s health as their first priority. Wheeler will be used as the opener in this game and Noah Syndergaard will come into play once Jack is done. His first start is expected to be the pitch count, or innings limit. The biggest thing for the Phillies is that Wheeler feels good before, during and after the game. If he suffers a setback, the prospect of playing October baseball becomes very tough.
The Phillies offense will get the treat of facing off against Kevin Gossman in Game 2. Gaussman Was One of Baseball’s Best Pitchers Toronto is having another strong season last season and 2022. Kevin’s era extended this season, but pitching in the American League East will do so for any pitcher. He will not be a pushover and will go after the Phillies hitters in Wednesday’s matchup.
