Cleveland, Ohio — Browns Cornerback Denzel Ward is taking the heat for Joe Flacco’s 66-yard touchdown pass to receiver Corey Davis Sunday’s irreparable loss to the JetsMonday said “this was not my coverage.”
But Ward said, “I’ll take the blame for it.”
TD was one of two in the final 1:22, which cost the Browns a 31-30 loss after leading 30-17 with 1:55 remaining.
Davis ran to the right by Ward, and safety appeared to be Grant Delpit’s last line of defense. But it is still somewhat unclear who should have had it.
“I was playing flat,” Ward said at a Zoom conference Monday in Cloud Cover 2 coverage on that play.
He said that in that instance, Davis had to pass by him while he operated the flat and should not have vacated his area to try to save blown coverage. As it was, tight end Tyler Conklin ran the flat route late to capture Ward.
But Delpit, who seems the obvious culprit if it wasn’t Ward’s coverage, noted that there were two possible coverages on the play. He called it a “communication error” several times and when asked to explain, he said, “I’m not going to play the blame game with my teammates.”
Similarly, coach Kevin Stefansky said that he would not shirk coverage responsibilities because it is not constructive. He insisted on communication with the 1-1 Steelers coming to City on Thursday night and fixing things quickly.
Ward also said he didn’t think Brown needed to employ a deep “angel” safety the way Greg Williams did when he was the coordinator here to avoid the receiver behind him.
Ward maintained “it’s an easy fix” and Brown only needs to communicate better in the back end.
He also said that he did not speak after the game as no one approached him at his locker. He said that if he had been given a chance, he would have explained his role on the play after the game.
He said he spoke on Twitter on Monday morning because he wanted to set the record straight. When Pro Football Analyst John Kosco tweeted that Ward gave up more than 100 yards For the first time in his career, either NFL or college, Ward replied, “Lol I was only targeted once yesterday. There’s a lot of fake news out there. People don’t know what they don’t know.”
The Browns must correct their mistakes quickly to avoid slipping the Steelers 1-2 on Thursday night, and they must now try to correct their mistakes without defensive ends Jedvonne Clooney (right) and Chase Vinovich (hamstrings) , who were injured vs. The Jets and Joe have both been kicked out of the game.
