Stoke City Philippe Coutinho, a key midfielder for Brazil, has been out for up to ten weeks and won’t play in the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The best case scenario for Coutinho’s recovery from his quadriceps injury is a seven-week absence.

He had had a difficult time making the team due to a decline in form and a lack of consistent play, but the injury eliminates him from Qatar 2022.

The 30-year-old was not included in the team for Aston Villa’s 3-1 victory against Manchester United, and new manager Unai Emery announced that he would not be available for either the Premier League match at Brighton the following weekend or Thursday’s Carabao Cup match at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard had very low expectations for Coutinho’s ability to participate in the tournament in Qatar, which begins in less than two weeks. It has since been determined that Coutinho will miss the competition due to injury.

With much hoopla, Coutinho transferred from Barcelona to Villa in January on loan, and despite his mediocre performances, Villa chose to pay £17 million to permanently acquire him.

Steven Gerrard, who was fired last month, was the driving force behind the Coutinho acquisition, but it hasn’t yet yielded the desired results.

What may be his long-term position at the club under Emery is further clouded by this most recent setback.
