EPL: Ball was in play - Referee Pawson under fire for disallowing Ronaldo's goal against Newcastle

Former Premier League player Micky Gray criticized referee Graig Pawson for overturning Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal in Sunday’s 0-0 draw between Manchester United and Newcastle.

The unusual incident during the game resulted in the Portugal international receiving a booking after having a goal disallowed.

After stealing the ball from Magpies goalie Nick Pope in the middle of the field, Ronaldo rolled it into the goal with his left foot.

Newcastle was initially given a free kick for an earlier offside against Ronaldo, but Pawson sounded his whistle to restart play and allow Newcastle to collect the ball.

The former Juventus and Real Madrid player, though, along with his United teammates, claimed that the free kick had already been taken.

The ball was kicked to Pope by Fabian Schar before Ronaldo snatched it and put it in the goal, according to replays.

The ball is in play, according to Gray, who also believes Newcastle got away with it on talkSPORT. Ronaldo is intelligent and quick to act; he moves as soon as Nick Pope touches the ball.

“They [the Newcastle players] will all insist they haven’t taken the free-kick,” the referee said.

In their first 10 Premier League games of the season, Manchester United has won six, lost three, and drew one.

The Red Devils’ greatest defeat this year came at the hands of Manchester City (6:3) and Brentford (4:0), and they kept fifth place in the standings.
