Erik ten Hag has provided an explanation for his choice to replace Marcus Rashford in Sunday’s goalless draw at home against Newcastle with only Cristiano Ronaldo.

He claimed that the majority of his guys weren’t available.

Due to illness and fitness difficulties, important players like Christian Eriksen and Anthony Martial were not included in the matchday roster.

Ten Hag only made one adjustment, exchanging Ronaldo for Rashford as United sought the victor.

When questioned why he only used one substitute, the former Ajax manager responded, “Exactly. As you are aware, certain players were unavailable today. Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay, and Christian Eriksen are all unavailable.

“So that’s how I felt, then. Rashy and I introduced something new, and I believe he made a difference. If he scored, then you did everything correctly.

Manchester United drew for the first time this year after winning six and winning three Premier League games prior to this one.

Early in the season, Brentford and Manchester City handed the Red Devils their worst defeats.
