The Boston rapper and producer celebrates the holidays with longtime collaborator Lateb.

M-Dot, a veteran Boston rapper, is back with a new holiday single, “Christmas Trippin,” with longtime collaborator Lateb. Furthermore, both spit bars over some smooth boom-bap production, complete with jingling bells to fit the occasion. M-Dot also produced this track, and he and Lateb spit quirky and stylish bars about the holiday. It has a very different feel to his previous tracks, such as the politically charged “Reaganomics.” Nonetheless, their skills as MCs and writers shine through, almost as much as their creativity and sense of humour.

Instrumentally, the song employs samples and a classic boom-bap drum loop to create a simple but effective Christmas theme. Furthermore, the bells are quite subtle, so the festive nature of the song does not overpower the instrumental. Furthermore, the guitars cut through the mix the most clearly, so the main melody distracts listeners. Finally, the instrumental fit perfectly with the song’s lyrical themes and topics, which are the main attraction.

Furthermore, M-Dot and Lateb deliver animated, engaging, and consistent performances on this track. “Christmas Trippin” is packed with holiday movie references, cheeky mentions of Christmas iconography, and a shoutout to Bruce Willis. “I mean, Bruce Willis is Christmas,” the final skit declares, most likely referring to Die Hard. Nonetheless, it’s nerdy and playful in the best possible way. They don’t skimp on the lyrical side of things, though, with a strong command of internal rhyme schemes and flows. While it’s very niche, it’s a great listen for the holidays.
