LISTEN: SMOKE DZA & THE SMOKERS CLUB – WHAT WOULD PUSH DO
|
The bass-heavy track is from his most recent album, “Money For Dummies.”
Smoke DZA recently released his new album Money For Dummies, which is full of diverse highlights and has something for everyone. However, “What Would Push Do?” was one of the album’s most visceral and immediate moments. Furthermore, DZA fans can expect an even more seamless blend of smooth flows, cloudy instrumentation, and a more traditional-sounding beat. Nonetheless, the 38-year-old has some tricks up his sleeve, as this track is undeniably nasty.
To begin, the track title may initially raise some eyebrows. It actually refers to Pusha T‘s song “What Would Meek Do?” from his critically acclaimed 2018 album, DAYTONA. Not only does the instrumental have a similar rhythm, tempo, and swing to Push, but DZA’s delivery is also similar. Furthermore, Smoke’s voice has a nasty rasp to it on this track, to the point where one expects Push’s “Yuuugh!” to come out at any moment.
Nonetheless, the obvious homage does not cross the line into rip-off territory. For one thing, DZA’s lyrical approach is more expansive and varied. Then there’s the actual instrumental. The chorus of “Today, we selling’ bass” is accentuated by a massive drop. Furthermore, the bass on this track feels borderline overwhelming, which is something that cannot be said about much of his previous 2022 output.
Furthermore, “What Would Push Do?” is the exception rather than the rule on Money For Dummies. More soulful boom-bap, drumless street tales, and wavy weed anthems are on the way. However, among DZA’s many talents, this is a sound that fans would love to hear explored and developed further.
