Travel photographer puts iPhone 14 Pro’s new 48MP camera to the test

Every year travel photographer Austin Mann surprises people by putting new iPhone cameras to the test. This time, with the new camera system of the iPhone 14 Pro, is no different. Sharing his experience with smartphones and his impressions of the new cameras, Mann traveled to Scotland to capture 48MP ProRAW shots. From the beginning, photographer Says how excited he was about the new 48MP resolution because “I crop 100% of my images. Whether it’s just a few pixels or by cropping most of the frame, I use cropping as a tool to keep the viewer’s attention.” The eyes can be balanced/directed where I want it and cut off the fluff.

It’s a powerful way to view and shoot, and I encourage photographers with all cameras to get more creative with their cropping as it can often enhance an average image to an excellent image with just a few clicks.

Mann gives some details about the main 48MP camera of the iPhone 14 Pro. When shooting in ProRAW, he found most images to be around 80MB, with the smallest files as low as 45MB and the largest 117MB.

For low-light conditions, he decided to switch from 48MP to 12MP because when he was working with fast-moving subjects, he found that with those settings, “the camera is super responsive and in these limited settings.” Will render the best possible image files in light conditions.”

After testing both options, the travel photographer shared some thoughts on why he decided to shoot most photos with ProRAW at 12MP:

  1. 12-megapixel is still where the camera really shines—it’s lightning fast, it’s the same resolution across all lenses, and it’s brilliant in low light.
  2. Capturing at 48 megapixels is a bit slow. It’s not crazy slow, but it’s slower than I’m used to.
  3. The available storage options (in both iPhone and iCloud) haven’t expanded even though the file size is so big, and I don’t want to run out of space.
  4. It seems like the battery life extends more quickly when shooting at 48MP all day.

It’s interesting how he points to the storage options – the iPhone 14 Pro can go as high as 1TB of storage – and battery draining.

Other Camera Features

Austin Mann also highlights some other iPhone 14 Pro camera features, such as the new Action Mode, which he says requires daylight scenarios to function properly.

At times, we were given little attention to how much light he needed. For example, inside an airport during the daytime, this didn’t work because it needed more light.

Regarding 4K Cinematic Mode, Mann believes it’s “a few steps closer to being a tool filmmakers can actually use in their workflow,” though he feels that 4K at 24 fps Also, a ProRes version of this feature is very much needed.


Austin Mann talks about SOS Satellite Emergency — which isn’t available yet — and how an eSIM-only iPhone could be a problem for US users.

I’m a little concerned about the practicality of the eSIM approach only for travelers with US iPhones, who frequently travel to the developing world. My wife and I usually land a project, get the money exchanged, and get a local SIM card so it’s easier and cheaper to communicate with people in the country. I keep these SIM cards in my everyday bag (see image above), and in areas I’m traveling to frequently, I can swap out the SIM cards upon landing and be ready to go.
