Unathi explains that one of her names is Fundiswa, which her paternal grandpa gave to her.
The media celebrity initially expressed dislike for the name, but now she finds it endearing because it lifted a curse on her family, for which she is grateful.
Nkayi wrote a statement explaining the name and how it helped her and other family members, who are now educated, on Instagram.
I grew up detesting the name Fundiswa since my paternal grandfather gave it to me without explaining the ancestral curses he was breaking at the time.
He named something I boast about to all of my cousins and sisters because he was the only grandchild. I now recognize the sacrifices dad made for our family. My parents reared us outside of SA for 11 years while leaving SA with his kid and his wife for THAT precise reason. Since apartheid prevented black individuals from receiving an education at the time, my grandparents wanted ALL of us to receive one. Due to THIS sacrifice, my parents only got to see their parents twice over this period.
“I now cherish my middle name,”
Still dislike all the acronyms, like Fura, Mafundi, and Fufu, but education looks well on me…….signed future,” she remarked, making a suggestion that she would go for a doctorate.
